Abstract

The Use of Agent-Based Modeling to Support Local Conservation Strategies
Track: Ecology, Archaeology, and Conservation
Author(s): Bill Hegman

The town of Huntington, Vermont, is developing strategies for protecting its natural resources. One part of the strategy is the development of a GIS-based ecological assessment. The second part is the determination of areas most likely to be developed over the next 10 to 20 years. To help with the second part, a build out model was developed using CommunityViz-an ArcView Software-based decision support system that employs agent-based modeling to support community planning and design. CommunityViz is used to create and test various local policies including tax incentives, zoning alternations, and municipal budgeting options.
