AbstractUtilizing ArcGIS for FEMA DFIRM Production Track: Cartography and Map Production Author(s): Joshua Price, Howard Davis The Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) is an important component of FEMA's National Flood Insurance Program. It identifies the areas at risk for flooding, and it is the means by which flood insurance is assessed for a given property. Floodplains on the FIRMs have been mapped through the use of CAD software for many years. Today, through the Map Modernization Program, FEMA is taking advantage of GIS technology and updating its requirements to include database tables along with the line work. The transition to a GIS presented certain challenges to meet the production requirements and the established cartographic specifications. This paper will discuss the issues and describe some of the customizations that have been developed to produce Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps (DFIRMs).
