Abstract

ColorBrewer: A Web Tool for Selecting Color Schemes for Maps
Track: Cartography and Map Production
Author(s): Cynthia Brewer, Mark Harrower

ColorBrewer is a Flash tool for choosing among and evaluating 35 different map color schemes with 3 to 12 classes each. Schemes are organized into three groups--sequential, diverging, and qualitative--to suit different thematic data characteristics. Colors are specified in CMYK, RGB (for ArcMap), Hex, Lab, and HSV (for ArcView 3.x). A set of icons suggest suitability of schemes for varied contexts such as color blind readability and black-and-white photocopying. The Web tool was developed with an NSF-funded Digital Government grant through the GeoVISTA Center at Penn State and is available online to all mapmakers at ColorBrewer.org.
