AbstractThe Status of GIS Education at the Higher Education Institutions in the U.S. Track: Universities and Higher Education Author(s): Halil Tas Though some studies have been done, there are many gaps to fill in GIS education at higher education institutions in the United States. The expectation of the business world, individuals, government offices, and universities on GIS education unknown. Whether the types of university and GIS programs (coorespondence GIS education, certification, and degree programs) have any relationship to one another is not known it is essential, however, to know the current trends to make aproper prediction for the future of GIS education. This paper compares universities using the Carnegie Foundation's classification and analyzes the types of GIS programs based on students, targeted markets, and GIS service areas.
