AbstractUsing Maplex for Paper Publishing: Conversion to Geodatabase to Map Publishing Track: Cartography and Map Production Author(s): Jason McKinley, David Stephens Universal Map provides one of the most extensive lists of U.S. travel and map products available; however, the company has been viewed as a traditional paper-based company for more than 25 years. While Universal Map does use Esri GIS technology, many map bases were created in other software packages, such as AutoCAD, Corel Draw, and Adobe Illustrator, as well as many manual cartographic bases. The focus of this paper is to describe the process of converting these various sources of map content into a structured Esri geodatabase, then applying Maplex rule bases to generate publishable maps. The paper steps through the project from start to finish covering both technical and work flow issues; therefore, the paper would be valuable to both mapmakers and managers. A discussion of database structure shows how data is best structured to develop effective Maplex cartographic rule bases. Maplex rule bases for seven different scales of mapping ranging from city street to U.S. scale are discussed and can be demonstrated. The paper then addresses several items to create a final product from Esri's GIS software, including indexing and grid systems, as well as generating map books. The paper also discusses the differences in generating final print published products versus digital products from a GIS database.
