AbstractDigital Field Mapping Instruction with Pocket PC Computers and ArcPad Track: Modeling Author(s): Joseph Frizado, Charles Onasch Digital field mapping in geology has grown from a convenience to a necessity. The University is enhancing its GIS/GPS-based summer field geology course by using handheld PCs. Compaq iPAQs with integrated GPS receiver, ArcPad, and other common software are supporting exercises to enhance student learning of field geology. Students create digital geologic maps and record field notes and sketches directly on their iPAQs. The University utilizes vans to get its students to the field which takes much travel time. Geological maps tied to highway mileage markers within ArcPad have been developed as on-the-road geology exercises converting long drives into educational opportunities.
