AbstractDesigning and Implementing GIS Training in the Enterprise Track: System Implementation for GIS Author(s): Michael Smith, Stuart Rich, Gordon Longsworth The Maine Department of Environmental Protection has trained more than 150 users in ArcInfo 8 by creating its own training program consisting of an ArcInfo 8.1 introductory class and several advanced classes covering such topics as editing, images, ArcGIS Spatial Analyst, and ArcGIS 3D Analyst. This training has greatly increased the use of GIS in the agency and saved an estimated $450,000 so far. The session will discuss what considerations led to the decision to create a customized course, alternatives that were tried (and why they failed), and the procedure used to develop the courses. Samples of the material will be shown during the presentation, and all of the actual training materials will be made available either on CD-ROM or via Internet download at the end of the session. St. George Consulting Group has experience training clients in a wide range of settings. The company will present the pros and cons of delivering training over the Web and in CD format. The College of the Atlantic utilizes GIS to support the applied ecology projects that the College undertakes with members of the community. The discussion will focus on training students and how students in turn train municipal officials, conservation groups, and others.
