AbstractA Technique to Maximize ArcIMS Performance with Large Shapefiles Track: System Implementation for GIS Author(s): Charles Crocker, Bryan Baker Web sites delivering spatial information need to support both scalability and high performance to render large volumes of data with minimal response times. For Web sites using ArcIMS and shapefiles, the site's mapping performance can be very sensitive to the shapefile size and the query method used to extract geometries from the shapefile. This paper presents a technique using the ArcIMS geocoding engine to dramatically reduce the lag time between a user request and map delivery to the browser. In the case of a shapefile containing roughly half a million geometries, performance tests indicate that the Farallon Geographics' technique results in roughly 40-fold performance boost.
