AbstractCollaborative GIS for Use in Geotechnical Engineering and County-Wide Utility Location Track: Surveying Author(s): Matthew Alles This paper explores the use of GIS in conjunction with Esri's ArcPad software, GPS, and wireless PDAs to aid geotechnical investigations and anyone working on or near underground utilities. The scope of this project is to provide remote, accurate, real-time topographic data for use in soil profiling, video bore logs, and verbal descriptions. Esri's software will significantly increase efficiency in creating a user-friendly database tracking the exact locations of all County-wide utilities. This database would help alleviate expensive repairs to utility services caused by improperly located utilities and subsequent damage caused by construction crews.
