AbstractTargeted Investigations in Environmental Science: TIES Track: K-12 Education and Library Science Author(s): Angela Cristini, Evelyn Horner Targeted Investigations in Environmental Science (TIES), supported by the National Science Foundation, examines humankind's use and disposal of chemicals including the impact of decision making on the environment and health. TIESaddresses the need to integrate science and use technology to elucidate interdisciplinary linkages by incorporating TIES into various courses. The project examines issues that involve scientific content, concepts of data analysis sociological concerns, economic considerations, and political perspectives. TIES utilizes primary data from the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), predictive modeling using geographic information systems, and functional use of the Internet. Chemicals targeted by TIES include lead, mercury, radon, PCBs, reducing air pollutants (acid rain), oxidizing air pollutants (ozone), asbestos, and DDT.
