AbstractIntegrating Demographic and Health Data Using GIS Track: Health and Human Services Author(s): Leslie Upledger Ray, Alan Smith, Barbara Stepanski Using ArcView 3.2, Paradox, and SPSS, the County of San Diego's Emergency Medical Services (EMS) has built an integrated emergency medical and injury surveillance system with GIS capabilities. This system has been used extensively for geographic analysis of disease and injury patterns. Many diseases and injuries are hypothesized to be inversely related to socioeconomic status. The inclusion of demographic features with geographic components has added to this system by introducing factors such as average income, density, and ownership to analyses. These analyses help public health staff target prevention and intervention efforts.
