AbstractThe Geography of Hunger in Hawai`i Track: Health and Human Services Author(s): Joda Derrickson, Scott Derrickson Hawai`i is one of the first states to collect baseline data to assess the prevalence of food insecurity and measure the association of food insecurity status to other health and demographic variables. Recent State-wide health surveys in 1999 and 2000 show nearly one in five residents lived in households experiencing food insecurity. Although Hawai`i receives $250 million annually for food assistance and disperses more than 7 million pounds of charitable food, the state still has growing food insecurity. GIS is helping us meet the challenge of presenting hard-hitting data, visualizing trends, identifying hot spots, mobilizing resources, and collaborating on solutions.
