AbstractUtilizing GIS as a Unifying Force in a Utility Organization Track: Electric and Gas Author(s): Thomas Dollente, Miguel Hernandez, Kanes Pantayatiwong GIS systems and the maps they produce have potential to be a central workplace theme for all utility employees. Very few aspects of our human communications are shared so consistently throughout the cultures of our world as maps. Almost every person educated on this globe learns how to read and use maps. Yet many utility organizations that grapple with the classic cultural gaps between disparate groups such as design and operations fail to fully leverage this communication standard. By using technologies just now becoming mature such as the Internet and mobile computing devices, utilities can use GIS systems as portals to information heretofore unreachable by every person in the organization. Such information ubiquity can and should be used to enhance communication and coordination across the entire utility workforce.
