Abstract

Philadelphia's Street Centerline Data Models and Internal Access/Distribution
Track: State and Local Government
Author(s): Paul Reisner

Large cities, like Philadelphia, often have numerous departments performing a variety of functions. The Department of Streets maintains the City's only street centerline file and has accommodated many needs outside of its core Sanitation and Transportation functions. While most departments utilize the centerline primarily for geocoding purposes, others' use is more sophisticated by way of relational databases and data access applications. Consequently, derivatives of the street centerline, both in the form of geodatasets and data models, have been created and are maintained by Streets. This presentation will briefly explain the history of Philadelphia's centerline, its data maintenance to accommodate the many City user needs, and the derivatives/data models maintained to support our users. Also covered will be some of the challenges overcome and still being tackled.
