AbstractGIS, the Link Between Comprehensive Planning and Cultural Resource Management Track: Ecology, Archaeology, and Conservation Author(s): Terry Jackson, Jack Tyler Cultural Resource Managers face a dilemma in that they are reluctant to publish maps revealing the specific locations of archaeological sites whereas community planners need this information to protect these areas. GIS map overlays of archaeological sites on census demographic and land-use maps bridge this gap between cultural resource management and comprehensive community planning. The resulting generalized maps provide critical information to both groups; the maps are an intuitive format to planners who customarily use census maps as their planning base and the maps enrich the site database providing critical information to assess the threats of sprawling development to sites.
