AbstractDeveloping Custom Applications for Land Trusts Track: Ecology, Archaeology, and Conservation Author(s): William Allen, Frank Conkling The Conservation Fund provides GIS assistance to land trust organizations, the fastest growing segment of the conservation movement in the US. While land trusts are becoming more technically proficient, the majority of land trusts, with small staffs and limited time to devote to GIS, would benefit from the development of user-friendly interfaces and wizards that facilitate their use of GIS tools. The Conservation Fund and Panda Consulting, in partnership with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, have developed the Catoctin Mountain Explorer, a MapObjects application that is empowering the Catoctin Land Trust to undertake conservation planning without previous GIS experience.
