AbstractLIDAR Technology for Improved Transmission Line Siting Track: Electric and Gas Author(s): Alan Voss, Patricia Hamlett Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), America's largest public power company, frequently has a need to rapidly plan routes for new transmission lines. However, the traditional route planning process, including acquisition of stereo aerial photographs, creation digital elevation models, ortho-rectification, photointerpretation, and the development of a GIS database, generally takes approximately 120 days to finish. This paper discusses results of TVA's test of LIDAR and digital aerial cameras to complete a transmission line route planning project in only 60 days.
