Online Map Symbol Library

Map makers find themselves designing specialty symbols, incurring the productivity loss, when they stray from standard symbology sets that ship with products like ArcGIS. Across the country, another specialty map maker may be designing a different symbol to represent the same map object. A searchable online map symbol library began as the answer. This paper describes the design of such an online resource. Unlike clipart libraries, the map symbol library grows complicated from the download cycle. Symbols have to be zipped into specific file formats, and various procedures followed to integrate them into different GIS tools. The paper presents metadata constructs useful for sharing such map symbols acros departments.
