AbstractModeling Population and Socioeconomic Distributions on a GRID: Opportunities and Pitfalls Track: Modeling Author(s): Gregory Yetman Socioeconomic data collected on administrative and census units are often useful in raster format for interdisciplinary studies. Following from the Gridded Population of the World project, CIESIN has created low-resolution global grids of population and income projections (to the year 2100), and high-resolution grids of population, and housing variables for the U.S. This paper focuses on issues in modeling the spatial distribution of population and associated socioeconomic variables on a grid. Modeling assumptions and the technical implementation of the gridding process will be presented. Methodological issues, such as choosing between simple and heuristic models of distribution, will be discussed.
