AbstractProposed Certification Program for GIS Professionals Track: System Implementation for GIS Author(s): William Huxhold, Lyna Wiggens, Karen Kemp Recently, the Urban and Regional Information Systems Association Board of Directors unanimously approved a two-year schedule for the implementation of a certification program for GIS professionals. This panel will present the details of the proposal and solicit public input from GIS professionals attending the session. The proposed GIS Certification Program is voluntary and is intended to acknowledge the GIS professional achievements of those whose primary responsibility involves the use of geospatial data technology. The proposal is not based on an examination and does not require membership in URISA. It consists of a point-based system on educational achievement, job experience, and contributions to the profession, and includes a continuing professional development requirement. It is self-documented and calculated by the individual seeking certification. The proposal can be read at the URISA Web site, www.urisa.org, under "Certification."
