AbstractUnderstanding Volcanic Hazards with 3-D Visualization in Colombia, South America Track: EMS, Fire, Disaster Management Author(s): Henry Villegas The 1985 Nevado del Ruiz Volcano eruption that buried the town of Armero causing 23,000 casualties, offers a tragic example of the need to understand the entire story of a volcano in assessing hazards, and to make it comprehensible to people unfamiliar with volcanoes. The Ruiz Volcanic Hazard Map was simplified emphasizing on specific hazard zones generated by each volcanic process. These zones were superimposed on Landsat TM data and draped over digital elevation models, in order to create perspective views. This 3-D visualization method helps volcanologists to explain the uncertainties of volcanic hazards to a public unfamiliar with volcanoes.
