Abstract
The New National Hydrography Dataset Data Management System
Track: Water Resources

This development addresses the transition of the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) to the latest technologies offered by Esri. The development supports a feature-oriented design and data validation through the use of the geodatabase data model. ArcSDE provides seamless data management and data lineage tracking. ArcIMS supports data access and distribution through the Web. ArcGIS provides an application environment for data creation, maintenance, and analysis. The major challenges of this development are: adopting technologies that are still evolving; adapting enterprise-based technology to a nationally distributed dataset; and maintaining backward compatibility with existing data and applications.
