Solana Beach Shoreline and Coastal Bluff Management Strategies
Track: Ocean, Coastal, and Marine Resources

SANDAG coordinated the first comprehensive, regional beach restoration project undertaken on the U.S. West Coast. About two million cubic yards of sand, dredged from off shore, helped restore approximately six miles of beach. Detailed analysis of dredging areas, placement of sand pipelines and beach areas were conducted utilizing GIS. Important layers included kelp distribution, archeological sites, and sensitive reef areas to assure avoidance, local bird habitats, grunion mating spots, and plots of all sampling and monitoring data for each of the 13 beaches. ArcMap was used as part of post-construction to display hydrographic contours on top of current aerial photos. Monitoring efforts will continue in the near future.
