AbstractAdvantages of a Bi-Directional Dynamic Segmentation Route System Track: Transportation and Logistics Author(s): Eric Herman This paper describes the creation and use of a new route system at the New York State Thruway Authority. This route system differs from the previously used model, in that it represents each direction of travel as a separate route. This provides substantial benefits to using dynamic segmentation for GIS analysis of the Thruway's facilities. This paper will include a description of the issues involved in creating a bi-directional route system, its effects on database requirements, and a comparison of advantages of bi-directional routes versus traditional centerline routes.
