AbstractMunicipal/Educational Partnership Provides Unique Opportunities Expedite GIS Projects Track: K-12 Education and Library Science Author(s): David Kuzminski, Kim Holden When the Town of Portland, Connecticut, realized they needed up-to-date maps for Town planning and economic development, they devised an innovative plan to digitize their complete set of assessor's maps. Many municipalities do not have the financial or human resources needed to convert maps to a digital format. The Town of Portland has a unique program in place called the Town Tech Educational Partnership Program. The program was developed so that high school students would have real-life opportunities and hands-on experience in local government. Through this partnership the Town of Portland was able to work with students to digitize 136 assessors maps in a customized, Town-wide GIS. The project served as a vehicle to integrate GIS into the high school Technology Curriculum as well as promote use of GIS technology within other town departments (i.e. public works, water and sewer departments, as well as the police and fire departments).
