AbstractCommunication and Visualization of Marine Biodiversity with XML and ArcIMS Track: Ocean, Coastal, and Marine Resources Author(s): Jeremy Bartley, Girmay Misgna The Ocean Biogeographic Information System (OBIS) is an online, globally distributed information network based on systematic, ecological, and environmental databases related to marine species. The data are geo-referenced and bio-referenced so that interconnected sources of information can be integrated. The biogeographical communication of eight different biological groups at different institutions is achieved by using XML protocols. A central server can query the different institutions and receive output in XML format. ColdFusion is used to extract the locational coordinates of each specimen and pass the information to ArcIMS for display on top of relevant environmental datasets (bathymetry, salinity, sea surface temperature).
