AbstractGIS for the Peace Parks of Southern Africa Track: Ecology, Archaeology, and Conservation Author(s): Craig Beech, Willem van Riet An arc of diversity spans the sub-continent of Africa, stretching from coast to coast, and desert to wetland. Straddled conservation areas provide glimpses of animal movement from days gone by. Added to the wildlife, ancient cultures exist, enriching the diversity of these habitats. With these protected areas, the opportunity now exists to unify these ecological and cultural footprints to conceive potential Trans-Frontier Conservation Areas. GIS is used to map the whereabouts of the Transfrontier Parks, to derive management and zonation plans and offers the necessary information to all involved decision makers to bring about a unity in Africa's protected areas.
