AbstractCollecting and Evaluating Resources for Use in GIS Modeling: Cultural Basis for Patterns of Violence Track: Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Author(s): Denyse Lemaire, David Kasserman, Erin Comparri, Pierre Lemaire Cross cultural studies suggest that where certain violence levels are culturally sanctioned, violent acts are relatively frequent but directed, predictable, and proportionate to the felt needs of the actor; where all violence is culturally proscribed, violent episodes are less frequent, but are often random and disproportionate to the actor's goals. In the United States, recent educational reform has promoted the idea that all violence is unacceptable. An analysis of criminal records using GIS may suggest an increase in random and disproportionate violence among the population segment educated under this new movement. Evidence to this effect has significant violence control implications. Denyse Lemaire Rowan University Lemaire@rowan.edu 201 Mullica Hill Rd.
