AbstractGIS Planning Tools for Industrial Promotion in Regional Thailand Track: Modeling Author(s): Jobb Virochsiri, Warin Wonghanchao Since the year 2000, the Office of Industrial Economics, Ministry of Industry in Thailand has embarked upon using GIS to assist its planning activities. Supporting the policy to promote more development in the country's regional area outside the Greater Bangkok, study was conducted to determine capabilities of land to accommodate the targeted industries. Through numerous workshop seminars and meetings, information and issues relating to site selection for different factory types are collected from various government and private parties involving with industrial development. Major issues such as proximity to raw materials, transportation, labor and other socio-economic criteria as well as environmental considerations are mapped or linked to spatial features on the GIS database. Esri's ModelBuilder in ArcView Spatial Analyst was chiefly used to develop series of complex spatial models assessing land capability and suitability. It was concluded that each industry sector does contain many sub-sector industries that have varying requirements and considerations that individual models must be produced. Commencing this year (2002), a continuing effort aims to study present clustering of the country's industries and use GIS tools to identify strategic areas with highest development potentials. At least one strategic area is expected in each region of Thailand (A total of five regions; Northern, Northeastern, Eastern, Central, and Southern). Once determined, strategic operational plans can be effectively developed to suit each location's specific conditions, potentiality, and prospects.
