Abstract

GIS Predictive Modeling of an Archeological Site Location
Track: Ecology, Archaeology, and Conservation
Author(s): Marilyn Pfeiffer

Government Canyon State Natural Area is a 7,037-acre state-owned park with an 11,000 year history of Native American occupation. The Texas Historical Commission and The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department have implemented a cultural management program to protect all known and potential archeological sites. A GIS Predictive Model will be created with the use of ArcView Spatial Analyst and ModelBuilder to combine multiple environmental data layers to create a probability model of site locations in the Government Canyon Area. Eighty-six registered sites together with information from a recent 30-mile trail survey by the UTSA Center for Archeological Research will serve as the initial database.
