Abstract

The Power of GIS
Track: Electric and Gas
Author(s): Michael Miller

Throughout the West, severe shortages of electricity have led authorities to call for stepped-up construction of new power facilities, including natural gas power plants and wind turbine farms. In response to this critical need, energy developers are identifing potential power generation and transmission facility sites. CH2M Hill, an environmental engineering and consulting firm, is working with the energy developers to evaluate the sites and guide them through the permitting process. The 'Power of GIS' presentation will describe how GIS is being used to support the siting and permitting activities through the use of sophisticated analysis and visualization tools. It will include descriptions of procedures and graphic examples of products developed to evaluate engineering, environmental and cultural issues. Finally, other miscellaneous issues will be discussed, such as level of efforts, setting expectations, map scales, anticipating change, CADD-GIS interface and so forth.
