AbstractRegional Land Subsidence Modeling by using GIS Track: Mining and Geosciences Author(s): Guoyun Zhou, Tetsuro Esaki, Yashuhiro Mitani A comprehensive simulation model of groundwater flow and land subsidence in Saga plain, southwest Japan, has been established by coupling GIS with traditional FDM solution . In this research, firstly, by using GIS, the fundamental data related to groundwater flow and land subsidence are established as a database. By using above database and spatial data operation ability(both vector and raster data operation), a GIS-based surface water balance simulation is carried out and spatial and temporal groundwater infiltration quantity is obtained, which is provided for groundwater flow simulation. Based on established GIS database and by using Visual Basic(VB) language and GIS macro language, 3D groundwater flow model for whole plain is established by the data transformation from GIS to groundwater flow code (MODFLOW) including boundary, geology, pumping quantity, hydroconductivity and specific yield parameter distribution, initial water contour, infiltration quantity etc. 3D unsteady groundwater flow simulation for past 18 years (1979-1997) is conducted with satisfactory agreement with observed water level data. Finally, based on soil consolidation theory, a VB program has been developed for land subsidence calculation. By assuming different water pumping scenario, the future land subsidence is predicted, and the results are also auto-input to GIS and displayed with overlay of digital map, and suggestions for land subsidence mitigation are proposed.
