2004 UC Proceedings Abstract
Collaborative Enterprise Planning for Utilities for Lakehaven Utility District, Washington Track: Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater Author(s): Rick Lortz, Bryan Dickerson Lakehaven Utility District (LUD) in Federal Way, Washington, maintains water and wastewater facilities in and around the Federal Way area. In 2003, LUD has undertaken a project to plan for and develop an enterprise GIS to support the business needs of a medium-sized water/wastewater utility. As typical with any water/wastewater utility, more than 80 percent of new facilities are designed by engineering firms utilizing CAD software. The challenges in implementing an enterprise GIS at LUD involved migrating existing CAD data into an ArcGIS geodatabase, developing the business processes for maintaining and updating the geodatabase from CAD data and creating an environment that marries the two technologies (CAD and GIS) into a cohesive and user friendly business critical information system. The project needed to also account for future initiatives at LUD in computerized maintenance management and dissemination of GIS data to field and office staff.
