Decision Support for Forest Fuels Evaluation and Treatment Planning
Track: Forestry, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management
Author(s): Keith Reynolds, Robert Keane, Paul Hessburg

Scientists at the USDA Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station have collaborated with scientists at the Missoula Fire Sciences Lab to develop a strategic decision support system for evaluation of forest fuel conditions and treatment planning. LANDFIRE data and model outputs from LANDFIRE's FIREHARM model are evaluated in the Ecosystem Management Decision Support (EMDS) system, an ArcMap extension, to assess hazard and risk of wildfire at the scale of subwatersheds. Evaluation results for hazard and risk are combined with additional data, related to feasibility and efficacy of fuel treatment, to develop treatment priorities for subwatersheds. The current prototype application will be demonstrated for two large regions in the interior western United States.
