Using GIS to Implement Smart Growth Regulations in New Jersey
Track: Environmental Management
Author(s): Lawrence Thornton, John Tyrawski

The state of New Jersey has been moving toward establishing a statewide framework for Smart Growth through implementing comprehensive growth management plans already independently adopted throughout the state. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection is contributing to the framework by classifying the state into environmentally sensitive regions. Using GIS and detailed digital environmental data, the NJDEP Bureau of GIS has created an i-Map Internet application using ArcIMS that can be used as a tool that reflects the NJDEP environmental rules to graphically illustrate the Environmental Framework for Smart Growth.
