GIS and GPS Applications in Public Transit Accessibility Assessment
Track: State and Local Government
Author(s): David Padgett

The city of Nashville, Tennessee, was recently charged with bringing its public transit system into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). A partnership was formed among the middle Tennessee Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), the Nashville Metro Transit Authority (MTA), city ADA office representatives, and the Tennessee State University (TSU) Geographic Information Sciences (GISc) Lab. First, federal ADA compliance survey forms were converted into a GPS data dictionary by TSU GISc Lab staff. Next, GISc Lab student researchers, accompanied by Nashville ADA officers, used hand-held GPS units to conduct a field survey of more than 75 MTA bus shelters. Finally, bus shelter attribute data, photographs, and point locations were uploaded from the GPS units and mapped using GIS software. The maps will be used to monitor the city's progress in bringing the accessible MTA shelters into compliance with federal ADA regulations.
