Lessons Learned in Creating a Real-Time Weather Data Track: Climate, Weather and Atmosphere Author(s): Daniel Konde, Rorry Moore In the spring of 2003 the National Weather Service developed an ArcIMS enabled website to display hurricane and related weather data. This site was developed to provide emergency managers with a tool to assist with hurricane preparedness planning. Since weather data is dynamic, it was imperative for the site to create and/or update data layers in near real-time. This paper describes the methods and techniques utilized to automate data creation, update and processing functions. This paper will focus on the utilization of Visual Basic and ArcObjects for shapefile creation and geo-processing. The paper will also describe the data update architecture, explore a select set of VB scripts, and stress lessons learned during the development process.
