Creating Planimetrics From Existing Raster Images
Track: Cadastral and Land Records
Author(s): Andrew Stauffer

Digital planimetrics used in GIS and civil engineering have traditionally been produced by private companies who specialize in digital orthophotography.but not anymore! Planimetrics have typically been quite costly and produced by a complex photogrammetric process to extract accurate structure dimensions and location. However, this methodology has limitations in detail. To overcome these deficiencies the Lucas County Auditor's Office has employed ArcObjects to develop a customized ArcMap application that allows for the creation of planimetrics from currently existing structure sketches. Seeing as the definition of planimetry is the measuring of plane surfaces, it seems only appropriate that georeferencing of existing structure sketches be utilized. This process not only allows the County to advance its GIS analysis capabilities but also acts as a quality control of the building sketches as well as identifies any incongruence in the database.
