Modeling Feasibility and Impacts of Water Transfer in Florida
Track: Water Resources
Author(s): Nitesh Tripathi

For about three decades, there has been a debate about moving water from North Florida to Central/South Florida to supplement the depleting water resources in the south and to support the growing population there. Sending water from North to Central/South Florida will have a major impact on related ecosystems. The current research focuses on understanding the feasibility and economics of water transfer and bring to light its consequences to both the donor and water receiving areas in terms of their ecosystem balance. Linear programming and GIS are used to model the current water dynamics in North and Central Florida. Impacts of climate variability and forecast on the proposed water transfer and risks associated with it are also studied.
