Development of an Automated Traffic Crash Mapping System Using MapObjects Track: Transportation Author(s): Renatus Mussa, Thobias Sando, Haitao Wu, John Sobanjo, Lisa Spainhour For accurate GIS crash analysis, the crashes have to be correctly mapped. The crash location is normally reported by a police officer at the scene of the crash and kept in the central crash database. Most jurisdictions do not have a standard method of reporting crash location. The level of details of the crash location would depend on the jurisdiction and the reporting officer among other factors. At a minimum, the officer would report the street name and the distance from a known location, usually the nearest intersection. The FAMU-FSU College of Engineering has developed an automated crash mapping system using MapObjects software. This paper describes different MapObjects methods used to automatically map crashes using different levels of details of the location information in the crash database. The paper also discusses the importance of the quality of location data for the implementation of automated GIS crash mapping system.
