Descriptive Epidemiology of Parkinson's Disease in South Carolina Track: Health and Human Services Author(s): James Rodgers, Daniel Lackland Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a progressive, chronic disease which is one of many movement disorders. It has been estimated that as many as one million Americans may have PD. Risk factors have been discovered, including increasing age and genetics, and a number of possible risk factors have been postulated, such as rural environment as well as exposure to pesticides and herbicides. Our research uses indicators of PD that were collected by the state of South Carolina such as insurance claims and health facility utilization and environmental measurements of chemicals in ground water sampling. Using ArcGIS we investigate the distribution of PD with respect to selected environmental contaminants.
