Integrating Document Management and GIS
Track: New Technology and System Integration
Author(s): Eric Svensen

The City of Montrose, a town of 14,000, located on the western slope of Colorado, has been experiencing a large amount of growth, with an associated strain on government services. To provide better information and improve business processes, the City established an enterprise GIS. In addition, the City has also implemented a Hummingbird document management system. While both of these technologies have improved business processes within the City, it was felt that the integration of these systems would lead to additional improvements. In 2003, the City began evaluating options for integrating the two systems and eventually hired Farragut Systems to perform the work. Since the integrated system was implemented, better access to information and improved efficiencies have been experienced. In this presentation, we will discuss the benefits and costs of integrating the combined systems, as well as the rational and decision-making process that was used to justify the combined system.
