Using GIS to Analyze Auto Theft in Morris County, New Jersey
Track: Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice
Author(s): Eric Piza

Previous Criminological research has suggested that the presence of Transit stops and stations increases the potential for crime. The theoretical framework of this assumption is the Routine Activities Theory, which simply states that where large groups of individuals routinely come together the chance for crime is marginally high. This paper will analyze Robbery in Newark, NJ, and will analyze the propensity of the crime near transit stations in comparison to other parts of the city. While the theoretical aspect of this research is not ignored, the paper asks very practical questions: Does robbery occur more in transit environments than in other parts of the city, and, if so, how can it be prevented?
