Distributed GIS: An Online Parcel Maintenance System Track: Application Development Author(s): Yichun Xie The development of distributed GIS services is imposing challenges to traditional system design and software engineering as well as application development. This paper looks into these challenges from four perspectives: service developer, service provider, service broker, and service consumer. The GIS service developer is essentially concerned with Web-enabling a GIS function. The development or customization of a GIS function to be accessible through the network is the deepest layer of distributed GIS services. This paper focuses on how to Web-enable GIS functions in a distributed network environment and presents Distributed GIS Function Development Models (DGISDM), which are prototyped through the customizations of ArcIMS and ArcSDE. The paper also illustrates several parcel maintenance services, such as, parcel split and combination, attribute updating, adding new parcels, and creating new sub-divisions. The paper concludes with future directions of developing distributed GIS services.
