Evolving Geospatial Tools and Databases to Support Global Sustainability Research
Track: Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Affairs
Author(s): John Mickelson, Marc Levy

We are rapidly approaching the ability to assess, with increasing detail, the patterns and relationships among humans and the natural systems sustaining them on a global scale. Robust and timely geospatial data reflecting such dynamics are critical to effectively implement programs such as the Millennium Project (United Nations), which is evaluating world-wide patterns and trends in fields such as poverty reduction, food security, health, and environmental sustainability. As part of the Earth Institute at Columbia University, CIESIN is developing data sets representing global population (GPW v.3.0), wilderness areas (Last of the Wild), urban areas (Urban-Rural-Night Lights), natural hazards and poverty dynamics. This talk will present preliminary results from the combined assessments of these integrated data sets, as well as discuss some of the technical hurdles and details encountered with constructing data representing such diverse research fields.
