Spatial Data Infrastructure: North Carolina Case Study-Panel Discussion on NC OneMap and The National Map Track: Spatial Data Infrastructure Author(s): Zsolt Nagy, Chris Kannan, David Greenlee, Andy Goretti The vision for an OpenGIS portal to serve a statewide community emerged at the convergence of two complementary initiatives. A collaborative effort featuring a WMS compliant ArcIMS viewer began as an outgrowth of a Mecklenburg County, NC homeland security initiative and The National Map. Meanwhile, the North Carolina Geographic Coordinating Council had begun phase one of planning and policy decisions for NC OneMap, a new program intended to organize geospatial data statewide and complement national efforts. A wildcard surfaced at the 2003 NC GIS Conference, where a groundswell of calls for active involvement by city and county government made itself apparent. Overnight, the Mecklenburg County viewer evolved into the NC OneMap Regional Demonstration Viewer. Today, community participation and private sector involvement in the program has increased throughout the state and a new enhanced version of the viewer has been released. Four levels of government now contribute data to the application. Panelists will provide their unique perspective on the successes, hurdles, opportunities, and future plans for the program, including a discussion on the opportunities to build custom applications utilizing the infrastructure.
