Outreaching to Bike Dependent Communities Using GIS Track: Transportation Author(s): Javier Aguilar, Matt Benjamin In Los Angeles County alone, bicycling accounts for 2.4 percent of trips which include bike to work, school, university, bike-to-transit, and other utilitarian trips. As the region's population grows and traffic congestion and air pollution worsen, there needs to be more viable alternative transportation modes for the people who live here. We envision a Region that is a great place for everyday, year-round cycling. This paper presents the Enhanced Public Outreach Plan to encourage more participation of transited dependent, minority, and lower income communities. Improvements to Los Angeles County bicycle infrastructure are expected to encourage bicycling as a viable transportation choice. To determine if a community is predominately transit dependent, a minority, and/or low-income, U.S. Census Bureau socioeconomic data and GIS, an analytical mapping tool, will be utilized to conduct this "environmental justice" evaluation.
