Modeling Ammonia Dispersion From Multiple CAFOs Using GIS
Track: Agriculture
Author(s): James Cajka, Chengwei Yao, Marion Deerhake

Ammonia is the most prevalent gas emitted by Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) in eastern North Carolina. It is a contributor to the degradation of the quality of air, surface water, and groundwater. Calculating ammonia concentration and deposition over a large region is difficult because there is little, if any, monitoring data. Research Triangle Institute (RTI International) has developed a methodology for modeling the concentration and deposition of ammonia that is emitted by multiple Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs). The methodology uses readily available, peer-reviewed dispersion modeling software and a GIS to provide a platform for modeling not only individual operations but for the cumulative contributions from multiple operations across an entire region. The methodology is enhanced by its flexibility in handling numerous variables including emission factors for CAFO emission sources by animal growth stage, meteorological and terrain conditions, and facility capacity and acreage.
