GIS Web Sites for Muncipal Government: The State of the Art
Track: State and Local Government
Author(s): Steve Anderson, Michael Terner

GIS Web sites are not experimental luxuries any more. One can argue that the paradigm has shifted and a GIS Web site is the primary mechanism that state and local government end users should access to gain GIS capabilities and to see GIS data sets. This presentation will focus on the rapidly evolving state of the art. The presentation will discuss Web design issues including the recent emergence of new and improved second generation sites. In addition, the talk will highlight advances in Web mapping technologies that have continued to allow better sites to be built. The presentation will use several case studies to address issues, such as the implications of ArcGIS 9.x, possibilities opened up by programming in the .NET environment, integrating Web services, using ArcIMS in association with advanced client-side languages such as SVG for greater interactivity, and allowing interactive graphic data entry and markup through the Web.
