Utilizing ArcPad for Proposed Energy Development Sitings
Track: Environmental Management
Author(s): Jeff Majka

Mobile mapping applications using Esri's ArcPad were deployed extensively to field teams collecting environmental data in and around proposed wind turbine and natural gas pipeline construction projects during the preliminary phases of siting studies. Proposed construction locations were created in a GIS as well as the right of way (ROW) and existing environmental data. Using ArcPad we were able to integrate Aerial Imagery, proposed locations, and existing data with the power of GPS Receivers in the field. Field study technicians were able to easily navigate the landscape keeping within the right of way study area using ArcPad to view the Aerial Imagery and the existing GIS data. Using ArcPad with GPS units provided the ability to collect and map additional environmental field data like noxious weeds, endangered species and wetlands. Custom forms were developed to record important attribute information about each of these collected features.
